There’s no evidence to suggest the Chinese ever used this as a torture method, the performer is hoisted above a water-filled tank, his feet locked in wooden stocks, and lowered inside. The stocks were locked to the top of the tank, a curtain was drawn, and assistants then looked increasingly frantic as the seconds ticked past. Eventually, when all hope seemed lost, a damp performer would appear free from all bonds standing on the top of the tank.
